Rain on a narrow street at dusk. Mira walks toward the only lit window: a small bakery with a clock over its door.
She stops at the glass. Inside, something about the bread is not quite right.
She pulls the door open. Warm light spills out across the wet cobbles.
Behind the counter, the baker is an owl — and every loaf on every shelf has a clock baked into its crust.
She climbs up onto the counter beside the owl and points at one loaf.
The owl doesn't reach for it. The loaf lifts off the shelf and floats down to her on its own.
She catches it.
Warm, and heavier than bread should be. The clock on its crust is ticking.
She takes one bite.
Every clock in the shop lights up at once.
Time runs. Dust, cobwebs, stale bread. The owl grows old and falls asleep beside her. Mira doesn't change at all.
The owl is a statue now. Moss grows on its hat.
The roof cracks open. Daylight falls on the only thing in the room that is still new.
Outside, it is the same street — a hundred years later. A tree grows where she walked.
She steps out into it, holding her loaf.
She is exactly as she was. Nothing else is.
She walks on down the street. She is saving the rest of the loaf for later.
