Two cities on two banks of a wide river: Pavel waves from the black quay, Lida from the red one.
Lida on the red quay waves, a long red skipping rope in her hand.
Both crews build out from their own bank: a black girder on the west, a red one on the east.
Vera, forewoman of the east, fist raised, glares across the river; beside her Lida waves.
Tomas, foreman of the west, points higher; Pavel watches behind him.
The east half rises higher still, its crane on top.
Opening day: flag crowds on both halves, which pass a storey apart; the children point at the miss.
At the gap, arms folded, Vera glares down from the high end and Tomas up from the low one; red flags behind her, black flags behind him.
At dusk Lida stands at the end of the high deck with her rope, Pavel on the low deck below her.
The flood climbs the piers toward the low black deck.
Lida lets her red rope down into Pavel's hands.
Tomas runs up and grabs Pavel while Vera hauls on the taut rope from above.
Tomas boosts Pavel up by his boots; Pavel grabs the rope at the deck edge while Vera hauls.
Pavel is up on the high deck in Lida's arms; Vera kneels beside them, her fist on the rope, and in the rain below Tomas climbs it hand over hand.
Tomas and Vera kneel together at the top of the stair and lower the last step into its place.
The same two banks: on the stair in the middle of the bridge Pavel jumps and Lida turns the red rope with him; Tomas watches from the foot, Vera from the top.
