A city made entirely of glass. On its tallest tower, the sun sits in a round iron hoop.
A crack of light runs straight down the middle of the sun.
The halves fall out of the empty hoop: one west, one east.
The hoop is empty and the city is dark, but for two golden glows: one in the west, one in the east.
In the blue west quarter, a boy finds one half glowing on the path.
He holds it against his chest: half a sun.
In the red east quarter, a girl finds the other half.
She holds it: half a sun, broken on the other side.
He looks east, toward the tower.
Past the tower, a small gold glow: the same gold as the half in his hands.
She looks west, toward the tower.
Past the tower, the same small glow, from the other side.
He crosses the canal bridge toward the tower.
She hurries down the lane toward the tower.
In the square under the spire and its empty hoop, they come toward each other.
Face to face in the square, they hold out the two halves.
They press the halves together: one sun, with a lead seam down the middle.
Together they lift the whole sun above their heads, and its light runs up the spire.
The sun is back in its hoop, lighting the city, with a seam down its middle.
The seam, like every lead line in the city.
