Every summer, Dadi sets her jars out in the sun on the terrace. Kabir watches.
Not pickles — seasons. Summer and mangoes, the monsoon, winter fog and fire, spring.
Going downstairs, Dadi turns back: don't open them.
Kabir looks at the rain jar. Just looks.
He kneels at the rain jar and unties its lid. Just to peek.
The monsoon climbs out of the jar.
He grabs the jar and tries to catch it back.
All over town, in the middle of May, it is the monsoon.
Dadi comes back. Kabir waits to be scolded.
She doesn't scold him. She sings — the song that calls clouds home.
The cloud comes down, small and sleepy, to the jar.
Back into the jar it goes, and Dadi ties the lid on. A frog watches.
Evening. Dadi opens the summer jar, and the mangoes are very sweet.
Only one thing is different now.
